For those of you who have not kept up with the news, yesterday a Russian fighter plane took down an American MQ-9 Reaper drone flying in international waters over the Black Sea. The popular media narrative has described the SU-27 as “clipping the propeller” of the drone after “having tried to dump fuel on it.” There is no way the SU-27 "clipped the propeller" of this MQ-9 reaper drone. Its propeller is tiny: You could not clip the propeller without damaging both aircraft much more significantly and, more importantly, risking a crash on the part of the Russian pilot. It is much more likely the SU-27 flew incredibly close to it and that the Reaper was taken out by the wake turbulence. If you were a Russian pilot, which approach would you rather take: Buzzing the drone or actually making contact with it? The choice is obvious. This is also why the Russians are able to say, "They did not come into contact with the drone." There is a childish literalism about it. The bit of the story about the Russian jet dumping fuel on the drone and lighting it with its engine is also unbelievable---as that sounds much, much more difficult than using wake turbulence to take the drone out. However, it is possible that the Russian jet dumped fuel on it to interfere with its electronic equipment. It would be incredibly difficult and might not work. You certainly would try using turbulence first. My guess, the Russians got incredibly close to it and let the plane's wake take it out. As for where these other narratives are coming from, I can only guess. They do demonstrate, however, that our media is not critically assessing the accounts it receives.

So, crucially, the moment of contact is missing from this video. However, this does demonstrate that the fuel dump part of the story is true and that the propellor was, in fact, damaged. There is no video of the Russian jet contacting the blade, however.
