Concentration Camps Are a Real Possibility
The Parallels Between the Second Anglo-Boer War and a Potential Ukrainian Insurgency Against the Russian Occupation
Hypothetically, let's assume Putin does win this war: There will be thousands upon thousands of armed dissidents who will continue to carry out a guerilla campaign against Russia (in fact, one fear is that this campaign might continue even after Russia leaves Ukraine at some point in the future---becoming something like what the IRA was to the UK). People may not be aware of this, but concentration camps were actually an invention of the British to undermine the guerilla campaign of the Boers in the Second Anglo-Boer War (though, in truth, these camps had more in common with the strategic hamlets of Vietnam and the American Japanese Internment Camps than with Hitler's camps though these British camps were far, far worse than anything Americans have implemented). The idea was that if the population was living in an organized camp, the guerillas could not blend in with the civilian population and use civilian infrastructure for their logistical needs. (Interesting side note: Hitler actually gave a speech defending his concentration camps, prior to the holocaust, by saying essentially that the Germans copied the idea from the English and at least they didn't put women and children in their camps. Of course, we all know they eventually did.)
So, in fact, people who think that concentration camps have no chance of appearing in this Ukraine conflict should familiarize themselves with the Second Boer War, whose events might foreshadow the second stage of this Ukrainian conflict. Some sort of authoritarian regimentation---including camps for Ukrainian dissidents (or their families) ---is very likely to appear if Russia is not defeated or, at least, brought to the negotiating table. If you think such tactics are unlikely, then please tell me what alternative tactics the Russians will employ—esp. given how successful insurgencies have proven against Western governments. The only advantage Russia has in fighting an insurgency is its moral flexibility vis-a-vis the West.
