I promise some serious posts shortly, on why Ukraine needs F16’s, the importance of long term artillery contracts to ending the war, and on Wagner’s sabre rattling towards Poland.
But for now, I present you with the following:
I hope Tom Holland dies a very painful death. Anyone who denies the existence of an authentic American culinary tradition is trash. His remarks are beyond ignorant. It saddens me that, because he is both younger and healthier than I am, I will not get to witness his demise: I can only hope he develops a drug addiction or something that helps make up the difference.
In a recent video he denied that there are any authentic American dishes and berated a man for claiming the Hamburger has American origins, saying its origin is German. This is not actually correct.
The American Hamburger is not German: The German dish refers to just the steak portion, the ground beef patty. The idea of making a "Hamburger Steak Sandwich" from the patty is American. The sandwich has its origins in the 1904 World Fair in St. Louis Missouri. Hamburger Steak Sandwich then got shortened to just Hamburger.
Other American foods:
1) Corn Dogs (Invented by German Immigrants who wanted a sausage dish palatable to Americans who disliked the old world recipes.)
2) BBQ (Developed from Native American and Carribean populations)
3) Clam Chowder
4) Hominy Grits
5) Key Lime Pie (The word Key suggests its origins in Florida, specifically Key West)
6) Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches (Its origins are from the Civil War.)
7) S'mores
8 ) Buffalo Wings
9) Graham Crackers
10) Gumbo (which does have French influences since it uses roux, I admit; nonetheless, it is not a French dish.)
11) Corn bread
12) Hushpuppies
13) Jambalaya
14) Succotash
15) Red Velvet Cake
16) Lobster Roll
17) New York Cheese Cake
18) Pumpkin Pie
19) Anything made with Turkey (as Turkey was an animal native to North America)
20) Sweet Potato Casserole
21) Sweet Potato Pie
22) Sloppy Joes
23) Philly Cheese Steak
24) The Ceasar Salad (May be of Mexican Origin, Disputed)
25) All Tex Mex Cuisine
26) Texas Chilli
27) Boston Cream Pie
28) Rueben Sandwich
29) Soul Food, including Fried Chicken which is quite different from the English recipes it has its origins in
30) Popcorn (Native American Origin)
31) Cobbler
32) Crab Cakes
33) Beignets (I admit this has its origins in French cooking as does all Louisiana cooking but it is still distinct from French pastry)
34) Pecan Pie
English cookery, as terrible as it is, is also not as free from foreign influence as they claim---it has considerable Roman and French influences among others: Indeed, their beloved fish and chips is actually a dish brought to England by Portuguese and Spanish Jewish immigrants; it is a variant of a dish called Pescado Frito. The first fish and chip shops were opened by Jewish immigrants in the 1860s and English cookbooks from the 1840s refer to it as "fried fish, Jewish fashion." Similarly, Beef Wellington was a French dish, the filet de bœuf en croûte. It was renamed Beef Wellington in a manner not unlike "freedom fries" or "Salisbury steak" instead of Hamburger steak. (Recall I only claimed the sandwich as an American invention, not the patty). Fish and Chips and Beef Wellington are the two best English dishes---and neither is English.
I would argue that the American culinary tradition, even if we ignore dishes that were substantially modified from food immigrant populations brought in, is richer than the English. Go put some vinegar on some chips and shut the fuck up, Tom.
